One Last Fall Adventure

Behind the scenes of the perfect shot!

It wouldn’t be an outing without the typical Valerie and Ashlynn heel click!

121115-8121115-11121115-10121115-12121115-13121115-14121115-20121115-15121115-17121115-16121115-21121115-18121115-19I can hardly believe that the last week of classes ended yesterday! To celebrate, my friends and I decided to have one last adventure before finals hit and we head home for the holidays. We were blessed with a beautiful 60-degree December day (welcome to Ohio) so we couldn’t help but spend it outside!

We are lucky to have the Cuyahoga Valley National Park just a short 30 minute car ride away. Unfortunately we had never been able to visit the park before, but this seemed like the perfect day for it. Upon arrival we spoke to a nice park ranger who kindly gave us a map, some historic information and sent us on our way. We walked along a bike path into a beautiful meadow. The endless expanse of tall grass and fallen leaves was so refreshing and peaceful. My favorite part was the juxtaposition of nature and architecture. Overtop the meadow was a large road held up by great concrete arches.

My smallness compared to the magnitude of the arches and the vast stretch of meadow gave me a comforting sense of peace. This reminded me of a verse from 1 Peter.

“Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.” (1 Peter 5:7 NLT)

Instead of worrying about everything that needs to be done for next week, I was able to enjoy the beautiful day and friends that I have been blessed with. My upcoming finals suddenly didn’t seem so daunting.

I’m so glad we were able to take one last trip before the semester ends; I can’t wait to return in the spring and explore more of this beautiful park! This week, whether you’re studying for finals, heading home or preparing for Christmas I hope that you can give all of your worries and anxieties to God, and enjoy the moment He has placed you in.

I Am Thankful

Can you believe its already December? My schedule has been so full in these past few weeks that November came and went in the blink of an eye. I just returned from a much-needed Thanksgiving break at home where I spent most of my time hanging out with my family, catching up with friends and working! I was lucky to be able to have a full week off and all that’s left is to power through two weeks of classes and finals! That’s doable right?

Over my break I definitely had time to reflect on how many things I am thankful for in my life. First off, my loving family who is wiling to get up early on Thanksgiving to take pictures with me, but not before a glamorous Waffle House breakfast. My incredible friends from school, home and work who are always there to make me laugh, constantly get coffee with me or brave the crowds at Target on black Friday. I also am so lucky to attend a school where I get to spend everyday learning about what I love. These are just to name a few!

It wouldn’t be a break at home without taking some time to visit a few of my favorite hometown places. The weather on Thanksgiving this year was absolutely beautiful, so my dad, brother and I took it as an opportunity to get some great shots in MainStrasse Village in Covington, Kentucky. The empty Thanksgiving streets made it the perfect time to get a few pictures in before we headed home for a day of family and feasting.

I hope that all of you had a great Thanksgiving and wish everyone luck with upcoming exams! This year has been so wonderful and I have several exciting things coming up soon next semester so make sure to stick around! What was your favorite part of Thanksgiving break? I’d love to hear about it down in the comments!

Golden Moments on Front Campus

Wow wow wow! I have to start out by giving a HUGE thank you to my wonderful friend Ellen Hart for taking these pictures! She definitely has a gift for photography and was so generous in sharing it with me!

I’m still getting used to this time change and the sun setting at 5:30; however, there is nothing like walking out of my last class for the day and feeling the warm glow of the golden hour. This week as Ellen   and I were waiting for my roommate Ashlynn to get out of class we seized the opportunity to take advantage of this light. We made our way to the striking front campus where fallen leaves cover the grass in a sea of reds, oranges and yellows. There is no better sound than that of crunching leaves in the fall. As strange as a 75-degree November day is we took advantage of the beautiful light and warm weather.

I took this as one of my last opportunities to wear my favorite suede skirt. This piece is the perfect fall color. I paired it with a simple stripped Henley top and my classic denim jacket. To finish off the look I added my Alex and Ani bracelets and quilted sneakers. Beauty wise I used my black Maybelline color tattoo eye shadow to create a dramatic winged liner. If you haven’t tried one of these shadows yet you’re missing out! They come in great bold and neutral colors, have fantastic pigmentation and really do stay on all day long. I can always been seen sporting a bold lip color in the fall! For this look I used a ColourPop ultra matte lipstick in the color Tulle. These are also a must have in my makeup collection! They stay on through everything and are only 6 dollars each! I loved this fall look and I’d love to hear about your favorite fall looks in the comments below!

A Hartville Halloween

Can you believe it’s already November 1st!? I think we all appreciated the much-needed extra hour of sleep last night. Yesterday, to somewhat celebrate Halloween my lovely friends Savannah, Anna and I made our way to Hartville, Ohio for a day of thrifting and friendship.

We spent the day wandering the aisles of the Hartville Marketplace & Flea Market. We found so many unique booths, combed through endless trays of antique jewelry and picked up some new treasures along the way. We then headed downtown where we visited the Hartville Chocolate Factory and managed to resist the temptation of chocolate solid shoes (every fashion lovers dream right?) Next, we wandered into a charming consignment shop where we all found new additions to our closets. I found a great coat for the winter; keep your eyes out for a post featuring my find coming up soon! Finally, we came upon an old building next to the train tracks where we couldn’t help but stop to snap a few pictures.

Overall I had a great time spending time with my beautiful friends and exploring new places! I’m so blessed to have wonderful friends who love finding adorable new spots just as much as I do, and I can’t wait to see what November has in store!

Not Your Typical Pumpkin Patch

102515-2 102515-4 102515-5 102515-16 102515-3102515-18102515-8102515-7102515-10102515-15 102515-14 102515-13 102515-12 102515-11 102515-17

There are SO many things to love about fall! Beautiful leaves, the rediscovery of our favorite sweaters and pumpkin flavored treats are just a few of the wonderful things about fall. However, I think we can all agree that pumpkin patch visits top the list of favorite fall activities.

As my roommate and I researched nearby pumpkin patches we stumbled upon the Maize Valley Winery Fall Festival. While the corn maze, hayrides, pumpkin patch, country store and pumpkin cannon all sounded exciting the thing that really caught our eye was Megasaurus. Now I realize that this sounds like the name of a make believe dinosaur creature from a 10-year-old childhood movie, but we were intrigued. It turns out Megasaurus is a traveling 3-story tall dinosaur-tank hybrid that “eats” cars filled with pumpkins. We realized that this seemed somewhat out of the ordinary for a fall festival so we had to check it out. After all, who doesn’t need a little childhood nostalgia every once in a while?

So we hopped into the car and made out way to Maize Valley. As we passed several pumpkin patches and fall festivals along the way we hoped Megasaurus would make the drive worth it. The show was amusing and different, and we shared laughs that I will remember for a lifetime.

At the end of the day I was so glad we drove a little further for something a little different! This will definitely be a trip for the books. What is your favorite way to celebrate fall? I’d love to hear about it in the comments!

A Morning In Eden

It’s hard to believe that six weeks of my sophomore year have come and gone! So far this year has been filled with fashion, friendship and laughter and I have cherished every moment. I treasure every night of watching American Horror Story reruns on Netflix with friends, cooking meals with my roommates and weekly coffee shop homework visits. However, I am always eager to come home. I consider it a blessing to have family and friends that I miss while I’m away.

I love coming home to a good home cooked meal because we all know that college food gets old quickly. Simply running errands with my family and catching up on TV shows with my mom is so comforting. It’s also exciting to catch up with friends. On this beautiful fall weekend I was so lucky that my beautiful best friend Lauren also came home from UK!

Fun Fact: our 6 year Facebook friend anniversary was today! (Although I’m certain we have been friends for longer)

It’s so relaxing to have a morning filled with our favorite ritual of Starbucks, walking through a park, taking pictures and catching up. I admit I am not a morning person, but today I am so glad that we got up and going. We were able to enjoy the crisp fall morning weather and catch some beautiful morning rays.

This year has been incredible so far, and I’m so excited to see what the rest of fall will bring!

Hats Off to Fall

092015-2 092015-3 092015-4 092015-5 092015-7 092015-8 092015-10092015-9  092015-11 092015-12 092015-13 092015-15  092015-18 092015-19 092015-20092015-22 092015-21  092015-23

It’s finally fall! The chilly air has begun to blow through Kent this week and I could not be more excited. Don’t get me wrong I love summer and all of the fun that comes along with it, but the cooler seasons are definitely my favorite. Pulling out the sweaters, jeans and boots makes me feel ready to frolic through a pile of leaves (dramatic I know) or sip on a hot cup of coffee.

The transition from summer to fall can be somewhat tricky. It’s so tempting to throw on that thick sweater, but we have to remember that there are still a few sneaky warm days ahead. I like to keep versatile pieces in my closet that can be worn in various ways.

Today I chose a denim skirt (throwback to the days of Limited Too) and a classic white button up. These pieces are perfect because they are comfortable, trendy and can be worn in various ways depending on weather and occasion. I wanted to bring some fall color into the look by focusing on one bold accessory. I decided on my burgundy wide-brimmed wool fedora. This hat makes quite a statement so I kept the rest of my accessories simple by layering a few delicate necklaces.

It’s so easy to over do it with the accessories. Everyday I follow this piece of advice from the one and only Coco Chanel:

“Once you’ve dressed, and before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take at least one thing off.”

The simplicity of this look is what I think made it a success.

I hope that everyone has had a fantastic start to their fall, and I can’t wait to share more fall fashion and beauty with you!

Dorm Room Tour

Summer has come and gone, and the school year has officially begun! A week ago today my family and I packed up our cars and drove 200 plus miles back to Kent State University. It’s hard to believe that I am starting my sophomore year of college! I couldn’t be more excited to be back in Kent and I can’t wait for the adventures to come. I’m ready to dive into my fashion classes and hear about my friends’ summers!

I couldn’t think of a better way to start off the year than with a dorm room tour! This year I am living in a suit style room with three lovely roommates. I’m so excited to have my own cozy little (and I mean very little) space to call home for the next 9 months!

Let’s get started, and welcome to my dorm!

Starting off with my bed. This is arguably the most important part of the room. This year I’ve chosen to use a vintage quilt that I’ve had since childhood. I also have a few pillows including my favorite white fur one!

This is a simple banner that I made using a page out of an atlas and extra fabric! I also used some white lights from Ikea.090515-4090515-5090515-2090515-22090515-21090515-18 090515-19

Next, I have a few small plants in my window that look out onto the health center (scenic I know). However, every night I am blessed with a perfect view a beautiful sunset.090515-6 090515-16 090515-9 090515-8

This is where the majority of my studying and coffee drinking takes place. 090515-10090515-11090515-15

This is my SMALL closet. I have quickly become a professional at fitting a lot of clothes into a tiny space. 090515-20090515-12090515-14

And there you have it! Dorm sweet dorm!

Dorm Room DIY

My summer is quickly coming to an end, and for many schools classes have already started back (1000 cries). Although this is a bittersweet time of the year I always love the few weeks where I pretend to be an interior decorator! I think any college student can understand the challenge of making a small dorm room feel like home. I love DIY dorm room decorations because I find a day of crafting to be very relaxing. This week I wanted to try using the simple tape technique to form a geometric pattern.

Here is what you will need:

An assortment of acrylic craft paints. I decided to go for a range of cool blues, purples and turquoises. 082115-2

You will also need a pair of scissors, a roll of black electrical tape (any tape will do), small bowls for paint and water, a blank canvas, and a selection of paint brushes.

Step 1: Cut the tape into pieces of various lengths. I chose to cut mine in half to make in thinner. Next, place it on the canvas in your desired pattern or shape.

082115-18 082115-17 082115-16

Step 2: Start at the top of your canvas and paint your first color with a large brush. Continue down the board and add colors as you go. I was inspired by the nighttime sky so I decided to take mine from dark to light.

082115-15 082115-14 082115-13 082115-12

Step 3: This is the fun part! Use a fluffy brush to add splatter. Simply fill the brush with white or silver paint and a touch of water. Then run it across your finger to create a splatter effect. After splattering my paint I decided to add star flares by running my finger across a dot of wet paint.

082115-11 082115-10 082115-9

Step 4: Wait, Make sure everything is COMPLETELY dry before you remove the tape. (Cue jeopardy theme song)

Step 5: It’s the moment of truth! Carefully remove the tape and touch up any spots.

082115-8 082115-3

Now we’re finished! You’re one step closer to having a perfect dorm room!

What is your favorite DIY or dorm room decoration? I’d love to hear it in the comments!
